Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, held discussions with West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari regarding a transformative maritime investment plan, aspiring to establish West Bengal as Eastern India's leading maritime hub. The outlined investment pipeline, estimated at ₹19,209 crore by 2031, promises substantial growth in the maritime sector.
The meeting reviewed an ambitious development agenda as part of the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, focusing on boosting ports, inland waterways, and logistics in West Bengal. Key projects include the Balagarh Multimodal Logistics Hub, expansion of Kolkata and Haldia docks, and enhancement of shipbuilding facilities. This initiative anticipates generating over 62,500 employment opportunities.
Sonowal emphasized West Bengal's strategic role in India's maritime future, highlighting the Centre's resolve, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to unlock the state's economic potential through collaborative efforts. Chief Minister Adhikari affirmed the state's commitment to fostering maritime and logistics growth, stressing continued cooperation with the national government to realize these projects.
