In the midst of escalating turmoil within the Trinamool Congress (TMC), West Bengal Minister and senior BJP figure, Tapas Roy, publicly predicted the party’s unavoidable collapse. Roy targeted the party leadership, accusing former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of facing repercussions from past political maneuvers.
The upheaval gained momentum as a group of rebel MLAs, including ousted leaders Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha, assert their claim over the allegiance of 58 legislators in the state assembly. Their rejection of Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as Leader of Opposition brought the rift into sharp focus. Ritabrata Banerjee contended that the faction's status as the principal opposition in the 18th West Bengal Legislative Assembly was recognized by the Speaker.
Reacting to the developments, Roy asserted, "The Speaker's decision is final... Trinamool's collapse was inevitable." Ritabrata Banerjee further affirmed the group's claim, backed by purported support from two-thirds of TMC’s newly elected MLAs. This prompted a letter to Speaker Rathindranath Bose, advocating for recognition of their leadership. The TMC’s high command, however, has disputed these claims, highlighting alleged signature discrepancies that might necessitate legal intervention.
