Ahead of five Zilla Parishad (ZP) polls in Maharashtra, the Congress on Friday authorised its local units to enter into alliances, and announced it would contest in partnership with the Shiv Sena wherever the latter is strong. The Sena, Congress and NCP are currently running a coalition government in the state after the saffron party broke its alliance with the BJP.
ZP polls are due next month in Nagpur, Washim, Akola, Nadurbar and Dhule. "Local office-bearers have been authorised to stitch alliance with allies in the elections. Elections will be contested with the Shiv Sena wherever it is strong," a statement quoted Maharashtra Congress chief Balasaheb Thorat as saying.
Maharashtra Revenue Minister Thorat made the remarks at a review meeting he chaired here to discuss the party's poll preparation. The meeting was attended by the party's leaders from these districts..
