Starlink, the satellite-based internet service provided by SpaceX, is now available in more than 50 countries around the world. This is a significant milestone for the Elon Musk-owned private spaceflight company, which aims to provide high-speed, low-latency broadband internet across the globe, especially the areas that are currently underserved or completely unserved by traditional internet providers.

The Starlink service works by using a constellation of low Earth orbit satellites that orbit at an altitude of around 550 kilometres - that's much closer to Earth than traditional geostationary satellites. This allows for faster internet speeds and lower latency, around 25 ms vs 600+ ms.

For customers travelling to locations where connectivity has been unreliable or completely unavailable, Starlink Roam provides immediate access to unlimited high-speed, low-latency internet on an as-needed basis all over the world. The service allows users to pause and un-pause their service at any time and is billed in one-month increments. This allows customers to customize their service to their individual travel needs, and avoid paying for internet access when they don't need it.

Starlink is designed to withstand extreme weather conditions including cold, heat, hail, sleet, heavy rain, gale force winds, and even rocket engines. This means the service can provide internet access in disaster-stricken areas too. In event of a natural disaster, traditional internet infrastructure can be easily damaged or destroyed, leaving people without access to critical information and services. With Starlink, internet access can be quickly restored.
