A new study from Denmark shows that AI is actively reshaping the norms of healthcare practice, challenging long-held assumptions about professional judgment, patient autonomy, and accountability.

Published in AI & Society, the study titled “AI and personalized medicine in healthcare: algorithmic normativity and practice configurations in Danish healthcare education” examines how AI-driven personalized medicine is being interpreted, negotiated, and normalized by healthcare professionals.

While much public debate focuses on accuracy, efficiency, and regulation, the authors argue that the most profound changes are happening at the level of everyday practice. Algorithms are not only supporting decisions, they are shaping what counts as good care, who is responsible for outcomes, and how clinical authority is exercised.

When algorithms begin to set clinical norms

While some welcome the support AI provides, others worry about losing core aspects of medical expertise. The study shows that resistance to AI is not rooted in fear of technology, but in concern for ethical responsibility and professional autonomy.

Generational differences further complicate the picture. Younger professionals may be more comfortable working with digital tools, while more experienced clinicians rely heavily on tacit knowledge and clinical intuition. Bridging these perspectives requires deliberate institutional support, yet such support is often lacking.

The study points out that competence development is not a one-time adjustment. It is an ongoing process shaped by practice, trust, and organizational culture. Without sustained investment in education and interdisciplinary learning, AI risks deepening professional strain rather than alleviating it.

Ethical dilemmas in data-driven care

The integration of AI into personalized medicine raises profound ethical questions. The study documents recurring concerns about consent, data ownership, and patient autonomy. This disconnect fuels uncertainty about control, consent, and trust, especially when data is shared across borders or used for purposes beyond direct care.

The geopolitical dimension of health data also surfaces in the study. Large datasets are valuable not only for medicine, but for economic and strategic interests. Concerns about international collaboration, data security, and political influence shape how professionals perceive the risks and benefits of AI-driven medicine.

These tensions reflect a fundamental shift in how moral responsibility is assigned. As algorithms increasingly guide decisions, clinicians must reconcile their duty of care with reliance on systems they do not fully control. The study argues that ethical frameworks focused solely on principles or compliance are insufficient. What is needed is a deeper understanding of how norms are produced through everyday practice.

Algorithmic normativity captures this reality. Ethics are no longer applied after the fact. They are built into infrastructures, workflows, and training programs. Recognizing this helps explain why AI adoption provokes ambivalence rather than simple acceptance or rejection.
