ICG Displays Exceptional Coordination in Managing Severe Cyclone 'Remal'

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) displayed outstanding coordination with Central and State agencies to effectively manage the situation arising from Severe Cyclonic Storm (SCS) 'Remal'. Originating as a low-pressure area on May 22, the storm quickly intensified into a severe cyclonic storm, making landfall on the night of May 26-27 along the coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh.

The Coast Guard Region (North-East) Headquarters implemented pre-emptive measures and ensured seamless coordination with various central and state agencies. This proactive approach resulted in no loss of life or property at sea. The ICG's strategic actions included deploying ships, aircraft, and shore-based surveillance systems for proactive monitoring and the strategic diversion of the entire merchant fleet from the storm's path. Timely alerts were issued from the ICG's Remote Operating Stations at Haldia and Paradip, warning fishing boats and passing merchant vessels about the impending danger.

After the storm made landfall, ICG Ship Varad promptly departed from Paradip to conduct a post-cyclone assessment. Additionally, two ICG Dornier aircraft from Bhubaneswar undertook comprehensive surveillance in the North Bay of Bengal, ensuring a thorough evaluation of the affected areas. The coordinated efforts and preparedness of the ICG were crucial in managing the cyclone's impact effectively.
