Heavy Rains Trigger Flood Alerts and Affects Goa's Education System

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an 'orange alert' for Goa, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by winds reaching up to 55 kilometres per hour on Friday.
The IMD has also warned of squally weather with wind speeds between 35 kmph and 45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph, expected along and off the Goa coast until August 5. Fisherfolk have been advised to avoid sea ventures.
On Thursday, Quepem in South Goa saw a record rainfall of 200 millimetres, the highest in the state, followed by Valpoi (174.6 mm), Sanguem (166.6 mm), and Ponda (140 mm).
A red alert had been issued that day, resulting in heavy rains from Wednesday night, submerging several low-lying areas in Pernem and Sattari talukas in North Goa, according to officials.
Poriem MLA Deviya Rane addressed the Assembly regarding Sattari's flooding, noting that students missed their exams. She urged Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and WRD Minister Subhash Shirodkar to take swift remedial measures.
Shirodkar reported to the House that WRD engineers were on-site, monitoring the situation actively.
State Education Director Shailesh Zingade informed PTI that teachers have been instructed to ensure the safety of students and are considering steps to assist those who missed their exams.
