The Congress-led UDF opposition has called for immediate actions to address climate change after the recent catastrophic landslides in Kerala's Wayanad and Kozhikode districts. They have urged the implementation of an early warning system to mitigate future natural disasters.
The recommendations were submitted to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan by the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the State Assembly, V D Satheesan. The suggestions include carrying out scientific testing, mapping disaster-prone areas, and establishing early warning systems in coordination with scientific institutions of central, state, and international standards.
Satheesan emphasized that Kerala, often referred to as a 'knowledge society', should utilize all available scientific knowledge to reduce the impact of natural disasters. The opposition also proposed a new law for rehabilitation, a township model for building houses, and a complete loan waiver for those severely affected by the landslides in Wayanad and Vilangad. Chief Minister Vijayan has agreed to review these proposals.
