Ernesto Threatens Bermuda with Life-Threatening Floods and Storm Surges
Hurricane Ernesto, packing 100 mph winds, heads toward Bermuda as a Category 2 storm, bringing life-threatening floods and storm surges. Warren Darrell of Bermuda prepares his home while Puerto Rico continues to face power outages from Ernesto's earlier impact. The U.S. National Hurricane Center warns of intense hurricane season ahead.
Hurricane Ernesto barreled toward Bermuda on Friday as a formidable Category 2 storm, which is likely to bring a foot of rainfall over the weekend, potentially triggering life-threatening flooding and storm surges in the British island territory.
Warren Darrell, 52, of Smith's Parish, said he stocked up on groceries, battened down the hatches, and removed furniture from the lawn in preparation for Ernesto's arrival, expecting to weather the storm with his family.
Meanwhile, Puerto Rico is recovering from Ernesto's previous passage as a tropical storm, which cut power to about half of its 1.5 million customers. Despite efforts to shore up the grid, the island's main power organizations have struggled to stabilize the network, highlighting the fragility of their infrastructure during hurricane season.
