Typhoon Shanshan Paralyzes Japan: Threats of Flooding, Landslides, and Blackouts
Typhoon Shanshan has wreaked havoc across Japan with torrential rains causing severe disruptions in travel, manufacturing, and daily life. The storm led to three fatalities, 78 injuries, and left 125,000 households without power. Evacuations are ongoing as flights, trains, and ferry services remain suspended.
Typhoon Shanshan deluged Japan with torrential rain on Friday, triggering warnings for flooding and landslides far from the storm's center. The storm halted travel and manufacturing, particularly affecting the Kyushu region where it made landfall Thursday.
As residents in Fukuoka hunkered down, university student Kokoro Osoegawa, 21, struggled to get home due to transport disruptions. She stated, 'I've never experienced all the trains stopping before.' At least three people have died and 78 were injured in storm-related incidents, according to the disaster management agency.
Bringing gusts capable of toppling trucks, the storm caused power outages for 125,000 households and necessitated evacuations for 4 million people. Consequently, Toyota, Nissan, Honda, and other firms halted production, while airlines canceled numerous flights. Typhoon Shanshan follows closely behind Typhoon Ampil, which also caused significant disruptions earlier this month.
