UN climate chief Simon Stiell has hailed India as a 'solar superpower' at the ET Global Business Summit, urging the nation to adopt a comprehensive climate strategy. India's solar achievements—already exceeding 100 gigawatts—are drawing international recognition, with electrification reaching villages ahead of schedule.
Stiell highlights India's favorable position to further capitalize on the clean energy surge, suggesting that embracing renewable resources can spur economic growth for its 1.4 billion citizens. He emphasizes India's potential to lead in green industrialization, critical as countries submit Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) plans covering 2031-2035.
Nevertheless, financial and technological support from developed countries remains inadequate, posing challenges for India's climate targets. Simon Stiell calls for timely submission of NDCs while reflecting concerns over insufficient funding—only USD 300 billion by 2035—compared to the required USD 1.3 trillion annually to curb global temperature rise.
