A startling rise in pedestrian fatalities has been documented in a newly released report by the Mumbai Traffic Police. According to their findings, hit-and-run incidents accounted for a staggering 38% of all fatal road crashes in the city in 2023, with pedestrians comprising a majority 54% of the victims.

The analysis reveals that two and three-wheeler occupants accounted for 48% of the fatalities, while pedestrians made up 40%. This alarming trend was highlighted in a report created in collaboration with the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety.

Notably, males were overwhelmingly the victims, constituting 82% of the fatality rate, with those between the ages of 20-39 years being most affected. Proposed solutions include speed limit reductions and infrastructure improvements to enhance pedestrian and cycle safety.
