The Delhi government's initiative to replace overhead electric wires with underground cabling is making strides in its expansion, now reaching neighborhoods such as Janakpuri, Malviya Nagar, and Safdarjung Development Area.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta previously launched a pilot in Shalimar Bagh, with the current phase set to extend operations into additional neighborhoods following administrative approvals. The project is executed by BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL), involving the transition of electrical cables underground to mitigate disruptions.
While the Janakpuri segment of the project requires adjusting to logistical challenges such as infrastructure density and road permissions, advanced technologies like IoT sensors are being utilized. The government is financially backing this urban development with a 2025-26 budget allocation of Rs 100 crore.
