Seismic Surge: 8.0 Earthquake Rocks Kamchatka, Tsunami Advisory for Japan

A powerful magnitude 8.0 earthquake struck near Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, as reported by Japan's meteorological agency on Wednesday. The quake prompted a tsunami advisory along Japan's Pacific coast.

The earthquake, occurring at 8:25 a.m., was located 250 kilometers from Japan's Hokkaido, the northernmost of its four main islands. Authorities have not reported any damage so far.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Geological Survey reported a depth of 19.3 kilometers for the earthquake, initially estimating its magnitude at 8.7. The National Tsunami Warning Center issued alerts for Alaska's coast and parts of the U.S. West Coast and Hawaii.
