Local authorities in French Polynesia have issued a tsunami warning for the Marquesas Islands archipelago, anticipating waves between 1.10 and 2.20 meters overnight following a seismic event.
The alert comes in the wake of a massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Russia's Far Eastern Kamchatka Peninsula, prompting urgent precautionary measures among residents.
Though only the Marquesas are expected to face significant impact, other archipelagos could experience smaller waves below 30 cm, which currently do not necessitate evacuations, authorities confirmed.
