SAIL's Green Hydrogen Trials: Pioneering a Greener Steel Future

SAIL is conducting trials using green hydrogen in the steel-making process alongside measures to lower carbon intensity. The Ministry of Steel defines green steel based on carbon emissions, aiming to promote reduced CO2 output in the industry. SAIL is integrating green technologies in upcoming projects.

SAIL, the state-owned steel giant, is at the forefront of the industry's eco-revolution, actively exploring the use of green hydrogen in its steel-making process. This initiative is part of SAIL's broader strategy to reduce its carbon footprint significantly.

During the 53rd Annual General Meeting, Chairman Amarendu Prakash emphasized SAIL's commitment to green steel innovations, including hydrogen-based steelmaking trials and carbon capture, utilization, and storage technologies. These measures align with the Ministry of Steel's new definition of green steel, based on emissions.

The Ministry's taxonomy classifies steel as green based on its carbon output, with a target of less than 2.2 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of steel. SAIL's ambitious projects aim to enhance sustainability through green technologies, efficient logistics, and customer-focused solutions.
