West Bengal Floods Put Rhino Populations at Risk

Floods in northern West Bengal have displaced rhinos in the Dooars region. One rhino was found dead in Gorumara National Park, while another was rescued in Alipurduar. Several more were reported missing, but some have been traced. Authorities are working to locate all displaced wildlife.

In the wake of recent floods, the northern region of West Bengal faces a wildlife crisis, as several rhinos have been displaced from their natural habitat in the Dooars area.

Forest officials discovered the body of one rhino floating in the Medhla range of Gorumara National Park, while another was successfully rescued from Kalibari village near Jaldapara National Park. Efforts are ongoing to locate at least one more missing rhino.

Additionally, reports have emerged of five elephants, including calves, being stranded in the swollen Jaldhaka river near Panbari forest. Forest teams anticipate conditions to improve, allowing them to guide these animals back to safety.
