Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis unveiled plans for an extensive underground tunnel network in Mumbai, referring to it as 'Paatal Lok', a concept popularized by a Hindi web series. This strategic move aims to alleviate traffic congestion by establishing an alternative road system.
The tunnels will create a grid that covers the city, operating as a parallel infrastructure to existing routes, Fadnavis stated at an IIMUN event. This innovative plan will complement ongoing metro projects and provide faster travel across the city.
Projects such as the Thane-Borivali and Mulund-Goregaon tunnels are currently under construction, enhancing east-west connectivity. A dedicated app, Mumbai One, will offer seamless ticketing for Metro, trains, and buses, without fare increases for commuters.
