The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) is undertaking a significant expansion of its R&D campus in the Anakapalli district, Andhra Pradesh. Spanning 3,000 acres, this move is considered a strategic decision to bolster research capabilities in nuclear science.

The esteemed nuclear research facility has sought the allocation of 148.15 hectares (366 acres) of additional forest land from the Andhra Pradesh government. Sources from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change indicate that an Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) recommended an 'in-principle' approval for land diversion earlier this month.

According to EAC notes, the project will involve building a perimeter compound wall, zonal security fencing, patrolling roads, and other infrastructure developments. Despite 1,722 trees being marked for felling, the authority assures minimal ecological impact as the expansions align with national strategic objectives.
