Local fishermen are blindly catching and killing giant stingrays in northern Sarawak. This morning, local fishermen in the Sibuti District, 60 kilometres south of Miri, publicly boasted about catching a stingray which weighed about 150kg in the South China Sea. Another fisherman in a similar incident last week, boasted about netting a 250kg stingray also in the South China Sea.

Nature lovers have expressed concerns about the need to capture and kill these magnificent creatures. A concerned citizen, Jessica Maria asked: “are there no more fish around to eat that these fishermen have to catch these gentle giants of the ocean?” Maria also questioned the Sarawak authorities as to why there were putting a stop to the needless slaughter.

The Malaysian Nature Society has been made aware of the capturing and killing of the stingrays. Many concerned citizens have posted comments on its sites to draw attention to the issue.
