MLB notebook: Yankees place Sabathia on DL with knee pain

The New York Yankees placed left-hander CC Sabathia on the 10-day disabled list with right knee inflammation, the team announced Monday. Sabathia did not appear injured Sunday, as he allowed no runs and just one hit in six innings against the Texas Rangers to earn his first win since July 4 after a loss and four no-decisions. It was his first scoreless outing since June 12, when he went 5 2/3 innings.

Sonny Gray would be on schedule to start CC Sabathia's next time out, as Gray pitched yesterday, as well, so he will also be option. Think options are Gray, Sheffield, Adams and Cessa.

Swimming: Wilimovsky claims third Pan Pacs medal with 10km gold

American Jordan Wilimovsky secured his third medal of the 2018 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships on Tuesday, with victory in the men's 10 kilometers opens water event. The 24-year-old open water specialist had won gold and silver medals in the pool over the weekend and came into Tuesday's event as favorite.

NFL notebook: Eagles WR Jeffery could open season on the PUP list

Still recovering from shoulder surgery, Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Alshon Jeffery could begin the season on the physically unable to perform list, according to an NFL Network report on Monday. Per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Jeffery is "progressing according to plan" but might not be ready for the season opener and could remain on the PUP list. Remaining on PUP into the regular season would require Jeffery to miss the first six games, although he would not count against the 53-man roster.

MLB roundup: Braves' Acuna makes homer history

Atlanta Braves rookie left fielder Ronald Acuna Jr. joined some elite company Monday when he homered to lead off both games of a doubleheader sweep against the visiting Miami Marlins. Acuna homered to start the first game, a 9-1 Atlanta win and duplicated the feat in the second game, which Atlanta won 6-1 at SunTrust Park.

Pouille outlasts Murray in Cincinnati opener

Andy Murray's comeback following hip surgery hit another roadblock on Monday after he was beaten 6-1 1-6 6-4 by France's Lucas Pouille in the first round of the Cincinnati Open. The Scot went under the knife in January but has had a frustrating time since he came back to the ATP circuit in June.

Eagles QB Wentz uncertain he'll play Week 1

Carson Wentz plans to play Week 1, but the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback sounded less certain of his status for the regular-season opener on Tuesday. Wentz is working only in "controlled environment" drills during preseason practice after participating in team drills to start training camp. He's recovering from a season-ending knee injury and surgery in December.

Police investigating Harden's alleged role in a nightclub incident

Houston Rockets guard James Harden allegedly was involved in a nightclub incident that is under investigation by the Scottsdale (Ariz.) Police Department. The incident took place around 2:30 a.m. Saturday, police said.

Patriots' Brady expects to play on Thursday

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady said Tuesday he "absolutely" plans on playing against the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday. Brady was held out of the Patriots' preseason opener against the Washington Redskins last week with what was reported to be a minor back injury. He's seen more reps in practice this week in advance of the rematch of Super Bowl teams.

Bears LB Smith gets $18M guaranteed, hits the practice field

Rookie linebacker Roquan Smith signed his rookie contract with the Chicago Bears on Tuesday, including $18 million guaranteed. Smith received a signing bonus of $11 million. Like all first-round picks, the deal includes a fifth-year team option.

Serena dominates in return at Cincinnati Masters

Former world number one Serena Williams looked sharp in her return to the hardcourts after a week-long break, soundly defeating Daria Gavrilova 6-1 6-2 on Monday to advance to the second round of the Cincinnati Masters. Williams, who made the Wimbledon final last month but withdrew from last week's Rogers Cup in Montreal for personal reasons, cracked eight aces and was never broken as she dispatched the 24-year-old Australian.
