Minnesota Twins shutting down right-hander Ervin Santana
Minnesota Twins right-hander Ervin Santana will not pitch again this season because of a lingering injury to his right middle finger, according to a report Saturday from the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
Santana, 35, underwent surgery on the finger in February but dealt with multiple setbacks as he tried to return from the injury. He finished the season 0-1 with an 8.03 ERA in five starts. He walked nine and struck out 16 in 24 2/3 innings.
The 14-year veteran will receive three platelet-rich injections in his finger in an attempt to get healthy for next season, the Pioneer Press reported. Minnesota has a $14 million team option on Santana for 2019 but appears likely to buy out his contract and make him a free agent.
In his career, Santana is 149-125 with a 4.06 ERA. He spent eight years with the Los Angeles Angels, one year apiece with the Kansas City Royals and Atlanta Braves and the past four seasons with the Twins.
