Houston Texans cornerback Johnson (concussion) placed on IR

The Houston Texans placed starting cornerback Kevin Johnson on injured reserve Tuesday after his latest concussion.

Johnson suffered a concussion in Sunday's season-opening loss to the New England Patriots in a head-first collision that left him dazed. It was his second concussion in a 23-day span as he also suffered one in a preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers on Aug. 18.

Johnson was cleared from the NFL concussion protocol on Friday, two days prior to the game against the Patriots.

Johnson will be eligible to return after eight weeks on injured reserve as long as the Texans designate that in the transaction.

Houston coach Bill O'Brien was concerned about Johnson on Monday and said Johnson would miss "a lot of time."

Johnson, a first-round pick in 2015, has one interception in 35 career NFL games (18 starts).

The Texans picked up the fifth-year option for 2019 on Johnson's contract in April, assuring he will make just over $9 million next season.
