Blake Wheeler had a goal and four assists and Mark Scheifele added a goal and two assists to lead the Winnipeg Jets to a 5-2 victory over the visiting Colorado Avalanche on Friday night. It was the first five-point game in the career of the 31-year-old Wheeler, who has scored 20 or more goals in each of the last five seasons.

Soccer: Homeless World Cup to honour the memory of late co-founder

As more than 500 soccer players gather in Mexico City next week for the 16th Homeless World Cup, the tournament will take place against the backdrop of the death last month of its co-founder Harald Schmied at the age of 50. The Austrian, diagnosed two years ago with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), created the tournament with Mel Young almost 20 years ago to improve the lives of impoverished people through the beautiful game.

NHL roundup: Blackhawks lose in Colliton's debut

The Carolina Hurricanes built an early lead and held on for a 4-3 victory against the host Blackhawks on Thursday night in the first game after a Chicago coaching change. Andrei Svechnikov, Jacob Slavin, Phillip Di Giuseppe and Calvin de Haan scored to give Carolina a 4-0 lead. Di Giuseppe was in his first game since a recall this week from the American Hockey League.

NBA roundup: Sixers' Embiid scores 42 in OT win over Hornets

Joel Embiid had a season-high 42 points to go along with 18 rebounds and four blocked shots to lift the Philadelphia 76ers past the visiting Charlotte Hornets 133-132 in overtime Friday night. It was the eighth game for Embiid this season with at least 30 points and 10 rebounds.

Warriors star Curry out at least a game with an injury

Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry has been ruled out of Saturday's game against the Brooklyn Nets because of a mild to a moderate groin strain, the team announced Friday. Curry underwent an MRI exam earlier in the day, and Warriors coach Steve Kerr found the results "encouraging," but he said Curry was disappointed.

Twins icon Mauer announces retirement

Longtime Minnesota Twins star Joe Mauer announced his retirement on Friday in a letter to fans. The 2009 American League MVP said health and family were the primary reason he was stepping away from the game after 15 seasons.

Golf: Kuchar sinks eight birdies to take the lead in Mexico

Matt Kuchar sank eight birdies in a second round 64 to take a two-stroke lead over fellow American Cameron Champ at the Mayakoba Classic in Mexico on Friday. It was the second consecutive day that Kuchar shot seven under par at the El Camaleón in Playa del Carmen after his bogey-free opening round on Thursday.

Tennis: the U.S. counting on debutants in Fed Cup title defence

The United States will send out three debutants to defend their Fed Cup crown against a powerhouse Czech Republic side that suddenly looks vulnerable after being hit with injury and illness. NFL notebook: Saints WR Bryant reportedly hurts Achilles

New Orleans Saints receiver Dez Bryant is being evaluated for a possible torn Achilles tendon, multiple outlets reported Friday. Bryant, who joined the Saints earlier this week, reportedly suffered the injury on the final play of practice. Bryant was helped off the field and scheduled to undergo an MRI exam. An Achilles injury would be season-ending.
