Italian Sofia Goggia crashed in training in Ponte di Legno in Italy on Monday, with local media reports saying the current World Cup downhill leader will be out for the season.
The Olympic downhill gold medallist suffered a fracture of the tibia and fibula, the reports said, but there has been no official statement on the extent of her injury. The Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI) said the crash occurred when Goggia ran with her right leg into a gate that turned to the right.
"No diagnosis has yet been made by the FISI Medical Commission, which will carry out checks in the next few hours," FISI said in a statement. They are expected to send an updated statement later on Monday.
Goggia leads the World Cup downhill season standings with 350 points. Austria's Stephanie Venier sits second with 261 while Lara Gut-Behrami is third (209). The 31-year-old is a four-time winner of the overall downhill World Cup title and raced to gold in the downhill at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics and silver at the 2022 Beijing Games.
However, her career has been riddled with injuries including torn anterior cruciate ligaments in both knees.
