India's highly anticipated tour of Sri Lanka is scheduled to begin on July 26 with a three-match T20I series, followed by a three-match ODI series starting from August 1. According to ESPNCricinfo, the Pallekele International Stadium will host the T20I matches, while the R Premadasa Stadium will be the venue for the ODIs.
The series will see both teams entering the field with new head coaches. Legendary all-rounder Sanath Jayasuriya has been named as the interim head coach for Sri Lanka, while former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir takes on his first assignment as India's head coach, succeeding Rahul Dravid. India's last bilateral white-ball series tour in Sri Lanka was in July 2021, where they won the ODI series 2-1 but lost the T20I series by the same margin.
This series is significant for India as it marks their second T20I series after winning the T20 World Cup. The Indian team, currently on a tour to Zimbabwe for a five-match T20I series, is led by Shubman Gill and coached by VVS Laxman. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka looks to redeem itself after a disappointing T20 World Cup campaign.
Following Rohit Sharma's retirement from T20Is after the World Cup, Hardik Pandya is set to lead India in the format, with KL Rahul appointed to captain the ODI squad. Pandya, who had a stellar T20 World Cup performance, aims to continue his form into this tour, while KL Rahul is determined to prove his mettle after being left out of the T20 World Cup squad despite his ODI World Cup heroics.
