Barbora Krejcikova etched her name in tennis history by claiming her second Grand Slam title at Wimbledon. The 28-year-old Czech triumphed with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 victory over Jasmine Paolini in the final match held on Saturday.
Previously crowned champion at the French Open in 2021, Krejcikova was considered an underdog this season due to illness and a back injury, leading to a subpar 7-9 record. Nonetheless, she entered Wimbledon as the 31st of 32 seeds and persevered to win the prestigious tournament.
In a remarkable coincidence, last year’s Wimbledon champion, Marketa Vondrousova, also hails from the Czech Republic. Paolini, who was the seventh seed, had recently finished as the runner-up at the French Open, replicating Serena Williams’ 2016 feat of reaching the finals at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon in the same season.
