The BJP on Tuesday accused the West Bengal government of not giving due recognition and financial support to Olympians from the state, attributing it to ''dole politics'' and ''corruption''. The party claimed that funds are diverted to fulfill political aspirations at the expense of athletes.
''These distinguished gems of Bengal are deprived of financial assistance due to the pervasive dole politics and multifaceted corruption of the ‘Banglar Meye’ and her faulty administration, which diverts funds to serve political ambitions rather than celebrating the triumphs and ambitions of our diligent athletes,'' said Amit Malviya, head of BJP's IT department.
He also highlighted athletes like Atanu Das, an archer from Baranagar, Pranati Nayak, an artistic gymnast from Jhargram, and others who have been neglected. Despite their accomplishments, they lack necessary recognition and support from the state government.
According to Malviya, some of these athletes will represent India in the upcoming Paris Olympics. He criticized the current administration led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for failing to provide essential backing, forcing athletes to seek aid from other states. He called for action against the regime to restore Bengal’s lost glory and ensure athletes receive their deserved recognition.
