Cricket Initiatives Drive Social Change in Mexico Prisons
Cricket is making strides in Mexico partially due to a celebrated program involving prisoners. The Mexico Cricket Association (MCA) received recognition from the ICC for their cricket-in-prison initiative, which has improved social integration and respect for rules among inmates. The program anticipates further growth and national competitions.
Cricket is gradually gaining popularity in Mexico, significantly boosted by an award-winning initiative involving prisoners throughout the country.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Wednesday highlighted innovative programs and exemplary achievements by its associate members. The ICC awarded the Mexico Cricket Association (MCA) the Development Initiative of the Year award for its cricket-in-prison and other projects.
"This is an important recognition at the highest level," said MCA chairman Ben Owen. "It underscores cricket's potential as a catalyst for social change and elevates our profile, opening more opportunities for growth."
The MCA collaborated with Mexico's sports secretariat to launch the initiative last year, and both entities are pleased with the reaction. Hundreds of inmates now play modified cricket weekly, and a national prison competition featuring teams from all 32 states is planned for later this year, according to the Mexican board.
"One inmate mentioned that cricket acts as therapy for her," said MCA secretary Craig White. "Another stated she wishes to continue playing and teaching cricket upon release."
Beyond aiding inmates' adaptation to prison life, the secretariat values the sport's emphasis on respecting umpire decisions, hoping this can foster a greater respect for rules among prisoners, added White.
In addition, Oman secured the women's cricket initiative award, while the Netherlands (men) and the UAE (women) were acknowledged for their outstanding team performances last year.
