In a significant shift in Indian cricket, Gautam Gambhir, the newly-appointed head coach, broke the news that Suryakumar Yadav would take over the T20 captaincy from Hardik Pandya. The strategic decision, backed by chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar, aims at molding a robust team in anticipation of the 2026 T20 World Cup.

India is set to engage in a six-match white-ball series against Sri Lanka—a critical precursor to the upcoming World Cup. The series, starting with a T20 International on July 27 at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, will be pivotal for the new captain and Gambhir’s coaching tenure.

Both Gambhir and Agarkar communicated the hard call to Pandya, who will continue in the squad but has opted out of the ODIs for personal reasons. The transition comes as Gambhir and the selection panel look beyond Pandya due to his recurrent injuries and limited playtime.
