Australian Oscar Piastri celebrated his first Formula One victory in a McLaren one-two finish at the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday, following a dramatic series of events. Lando Norris, who finished second, reluctantly surrendered the lead under team orders just three laps before the race concluded.
Lewis Hamilton secured third place for Mercedes, marking his 200th Formula One podium despite a late collision with Red Bull's championship leader Max Verstappen, who ended in fifth place. 'Very, very special. This is really the day I dreamed of as a kid, standing on the top step of an F1 podium,' Piastri remarked before the celebrations.
The race was not without its complications. Piastri initially took the lead from pole-sitter Norris, and Verstappen seized second through a contentious short-cut. After a strategic pit stop shuffle, Norris was instructed to let Piastri pass with more than 20 laps to go, a command he grudgingly obeyed. Verstappen, meanwhile, faced technical difficulties and expressed his frustration over the team radio.
