New Zealand took the early lead in the eighth minute through Sam Lane's penalty corner, but India equalized in the 24th minute with a rebound goal by Mandeep Singh. Vivek Sagar Prasad gave India the lead in the third quarter, only for Simon Child to draw level for New Zealand in the 53rd minute.
However, skipper Harmanpreet Singh clinched the win for India with a crucial penalty stroke just a minute from the final whistle. India will face Argentina in their next Pool B match on Monday.
