Ibrahim Adel netted two pivotal goals, propelling Egypt to a 2-1 victory over Spain and securing their advancement to the men's soccer quarterfinals at the Paris Olympics. The match saw Spain, already through to the knockout stages, dethroned from the top of Group C by a determined Egyptian side in Bordeaux.
Elsewhere in Group C, the Dominican Republic and Uzbekistan played to a 1-1 draw in Paris. This result was insufficient for the Dominican Republic to progress, as Uzbekistan had already been eliminated. The clash of the quarterfinals awaits the conclusion of Wednesday's games, determining the top two teams from each of the four groups.
Adel's opening goal came via a cross from Zizo towards the end of the first half, with his second goal, in the 62nd minute, showcasing his skill as he maneuvered past Spanish goalkeeper Alejandro Iturbe. Spain's Samu Omorodion scored in the dying moments, but it was not enough to change the outcome.
In the other group match, Rafael Nunez scored a penalty for the Dominican Republic early in the second half, briefly giving his team a lead before Uzbekistan's Alisher Odilov equalized in the 58th minute.
