Prior to the third ODI against Sri Lanka, India's all-rounder Washington Sundar disclosed that head coach Gautam Gambhir has imparted crucial strategies to navigate Sri Lanka's spin attack. Throughout the series, Sri Lankan spinners have significantly troubled Indian batsmen. The opening ODI ended in a draw, with Sri Lankan spinners claiming nine wickets to restrict India to 230 runs.
In the second ODI, leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay baffled Indian batters with his six-wicket haul, while skipper Charith Asalanka added to India's woes with three wickets, securing a win for Sri Lanka. With India trailing 1-0, Sundar emphasized the importance of Gambhir's insights to mitigate the effect of Sri Lanka's spinners.
"We've received valuable inputs from Gambhir, who excels against spin. His high-quality performances on such pitches are well-documented," said Sundar, according to ESPNcricinfo. He further highlighted India's preparation and tactical adjustments to overcome the spin threat in the upcoming match. In this ODI series, India's middle order has struggled, relying heavily on skipper Rohit Sharma and Axar Patel for runs.
Apart from the spin challenge, India also faced difficulties in dismissing Sri Lanka's lower-order batsmen, notably Dunith Wellalage. Wellalage's unbeaten 67 in the first ODI and his crucial partnership in the second match added to India's troubles.
"We aim to bowl them out for 200 or less. We've had opportunities in both matches but failed to capitalize. With major tournaments ahead, it’s crucial to seize such crunch situations," Sundar remarked. India plans to level the series in the final ODI in Colombo on Wednesday. (ANI)
