In a significant setback for India's medal aspirations, Indian grappler Vinesh Phogat has been disqualified from the Paris Olympics 2024. The disqualification came due to Phogat exceeding the 50 kg weight limit in the women's wrestling event. Her uncle and former wrestler, Mahavir Singh Phogat, expressed profound disappointment over the outcome, stating that wrestlers are sometimes allowed a leeway of 50-100 grams.
India's hopes for a fourth Olympic medal were shattered following the disqualification. Vinesh was slated to face the United States' Sarah Ann Hildebrandt in the gold medal match. Despite the setback, Mahavir Singh Phogat remains optimistic about Vinesh's future prospects, affirming that she will eventually secure a medal for India.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his support to Vinesh, calling her a 'champion among champions' and an inspiration for all Indians. He expressed his sorrow and urged the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to explore all possible options to challenge the decision. The IOA, while acknowledging the disqualification, requested privacy for Vinesh and focus on upcoming events. Meanwhile, India's medal hopes now turn to athletes Avinash Sable, Mirabai Chanu, and Antim Panghal in their respective events.
