Juan Antonio 'Chi Chi' Rodriguez, widely considered the greatest Puerto Rican golfer of all time, has passed away at the age of 88, according to the Puerto Rico Golf Association on Thursday. Famous for his performance skills and charitable efforts, Rodriguez secured eight PGA Tour victories from 1963 to 1979 and 22 titles on the senior tour. In 1992, he became the first Puerto Rican inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.

'Chi Chi Rodriguez’s passion for charity and outreach was surpassed only by his incredible talent with a golf club in his hand,' PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan remarked in a statement. 'A vibrant, colorful personality both on and off the golf course, he will be missed dearly by the PGA TOUR and those whose lives he touched in his mission to give back.'

Born into poverty, Rodriguez started working as a laborer at the age of seven and later took up a job as a caddie. He used a guava tree branch as his first golf club and turned professional at the age of 25 after serving in the U.S. Army. His signature 'sword dance' after great shots became a fan favorite. Rodriguez also founded the Chi Chi Rodriguez Youth Foundation in Clearwater, Florida, to help abuse victims. 'Why do I love kids so much? Because I was never a kid myself,' he once said. 'I was too poor to really have a childhood.'
