Red Sox's Jarren Duran Suspended for Anti-Gay Slur: Apologizes to LGBTQ Community

The Boston Red Sox, in consultation with Major League Baseball, have suspended All-Star outfielder Jarren Duran for directing an anti-gay slur at a spectator during a recent game, the team announced on Monday. The incident unfolded during the sixth inning of Boston's home game on Sunday when Duran, amidst an at-bat, turned towards a heckler and used a derogatory term for gay men.

Duran issued an apology following the incident, acknowledging the use of a "truly horrific word". The unpaid suspension begins with Boston's game on Monday against the Texas Rangers. "I feel awful knowing how many people I offended and disappointed. I apologize to the entire Red Sox organization, but more importantly to the entire LGBTQ community," Duran stated.

Expressing his regret, Duran emphasized his commitment to use the incident as a learning experience. "Our young fans are supposed to be able to look up to me as a role model, but tonight I fell far short of that responsibility. I will use this opportunity to educate myself and my teammates and to grow as a person," he added. Duran, who was named MVP of MLB's All-Star Game in July, is having a breakout season with a .291 batting average, 14 home runs, and 29 stolen bases.
