Matthew Forbes Wins USTA 18-Under Title, Clinches U.S. Open Spot

Matthew Forbes secured victory in the USTA 18-under singles boys national title, clinching a spot in the upcoming U.S. Open.

If Forbes goes forward with his enrollment at Michigan State University this fall, he will not be able to claim the minimum $100,000 in prize money due to NCAA rules.

On Sunday, Forbes defeated Jack Kennedy in a four-set match in Kalamazoo, Michigan, earning a wild-card entry into the U.S. Open, which boasts a record total of $75 million in player compensation.

According to NCAA regulations, Forbes can only receive compensation for actual and necessary expenses, such as meals, lodging, coaching, and equipment related to the U.S. Open.

However, he is permitted to earn money through name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals in college.

The NCAA lifted its ban on athletes earning from endorsements and sponsorships in 2021.

Starting next year, the NCAA and conferences will allow schools to share up to $21 million in athletic revenues with their athletes.

A Raleigh, North Carolina native, Forbes is the first active Michigan State tennis player to qualify for the U.S. Open.
