Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra showcased an impressive performance at the Lausanne Diamond League in Switzerland, recording a season-best throw of 89.49 meters on Friday. This achievement earned him a commendable second place behind Anderson Peters of Grenada, who set a new meet record with a massive throw of 90.61 meters. Germany's Julian Weber secured third with an 87.08-meter effort, as reported by Olympics.com.
Chopra, who is now a two-time Olympic medallist, had a challenging start, failing to cross the 85-meter mark in his first four attempts. He eventually climbed to third place with an 85.58-meter throw on his penultimate attempt, earning an extra throw. Competing against Peters and Weber in the final round, Chopra secured the second-best throw of his career. His personal best remains the 89.94-meter throw at the Stockholm Diamond League in 2022, which is also India's national record.
Despite the initial struggles, Chopra expressed satisfaction with his performance. 'The feeling wasn't great at first, but I'm happy with my throw, especially the second-best throw on my last attempt. It was a tough start, but the comeback was rewarding, and I enjoyed the fighting spirit,' he told Olympic.com. He emphasized the importance of mental resilience in high-level competition, noting that his early throws were around 80-83 meters.
Peters, the Paris 2024 bronze medallist, broke Keshorn Walcott's 2015 meet record with his final attempt, denying Chopra the top spot. This marks the second time this month that Chopra has been edged out after delivering a stellar performance, following Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem's new Olympic record of 92.97 meters at the Paris 2024 Olympics. In Lausanne, Peters led from the start, marking an early 86.36-meter throw and improving to 88.49 meters on his second attempt. Weber moved to second with an 87.08-meter throw and remained there for the rest of the event.
Chopra's second-place finish in Lausanne positions him third overall in the Diamond League standings, with a strong chance to qualify for the season finale in Brussels this September. Chopra, the first Indian to win the Diamond League title in 2022, aims to conclude the season on a high note. His performance this season has been affected by injuries, particularly to his adductor muscle, which impacted his showing at the Paris 2024 Olympics. He also withdrew from the Ostrava Golden Spike in May as a precaution. The Brussels Diamond League Final will be his last event of the season, as confirmed by Olympics.com. (ANI)
