Nitesh Kumar, drawing inspiration from India's armed forces and cricket star Virat Kohli, clinched a gold medal on his Paralympic debut, propelling India towards a record-breaking medal tally.

The 29-year-old, an IIT Mandi engineering graduate who lost his left leg in an accident, triumphed in the men's singles SL3 category against Britain's Daniel Bethell, marking India's best day at the ongoing Paralympics.

Adding to India's medal count were silver wins by discus thrower Yogesh Kathuniya and para-shuttler Thulasimathi Murugesan, and a bronze from Manisha Ramadass in para-badminton.
