Australia Supports Scaled-Back 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games

Australia has thrown its weight behind Glasgow's scaled-down Commonwealth Games bid for 2026, aiming to rejuvenate the multi-sport event's brand and draw more host nations.

Initially set for Australia's Victoria state, the games faced uncertainties due to cost concerns. Now, Glasgow plans to host competitions in 10 sports across four venues—down from the 18 sports in its 2014 Games.

Scottish government support and financial aid from the Commonwealth Games Australia (CGA) are poised to mitigate costs, with CGA contributing 2.3 million pounds ($3.03 million) for security. Confident in Glasgow’s confirmation, CGA boss Craig Phillips stated the revised, sustainable model would boost future hosts.
