Records continued to fall at Kanpur's Green Park during the second Test against Bangladesh as Yashasvi Jaiswal surpassed India's legendary opener, Virender Sehwag, by scoring the fastest fifty in Test cricket for the country. The Indian team adopted a more aggressive batting style, akin to England's 'Bazball', from the very beginning.
While captain Rohit Sharma displayed pure aggression, Jaiswal remained controlled in his shot selection. In the first three overs, Rohit and Jaiswal pushed Bangladeshi fielders to the boundary, scoring at an impressive 14-plus strike rate. Jaiswal celebrated a quick fifty, taking just 31 balls to reach the milestone, eclipsing Sehwag's record of 32 balls against England in 2008. The young left-hander is now the fourth fastest Indian to score a fifty in Test cricket.
Rishabh Pant holds the record for the fastest fifty in a Test for India, achieved against Sri Lanka in 2022 in Bengaluru. Pant's feat surpassed the legendary Kapil Dev's record from 1982. Jaiswal's dynamic innings ended at 72 off 51 balls, dismissed by Bangladesh pacer Hasan Mahmud. India declared at 285/9, achieving the highest run rate in a Test innings, surpassing Australia's previous run rate record from 2017 against Pakistan.
The opening duo of Jaiswal and Rohit scored 55 runs in just 3.5 overs, with Rohit contributing 23 off 11 balls. Their scoring rate of 14.34 runs per over set a new record for a Test partnership with a minimum of 50 runs, surpassing the England duo of Ben Stokes and Ben Duckett's 11.86 runs per over. Despite Rohit’s dismissal, Shubman Gill’s anchor-like approach allowed Jaiswal to continue his aggressive style, helping India reach the 100-run mark in a mere 10.1 overs, breaking the previous record of 12.2 overs.
After days of rain, Kanpur spectators witnessed an exceptional display of batting, led by Jaiswal and Rohit. India set a new benchmark in Test cricket with their dominating performance.
