Boxing Gold Medalist Imane Khelif at Center of Gender-Eligibility Legal Battle
Olympic boxing champion Imane Khelif faces legal challenges over gender eligibility accusations by the International Boxing Association (IBA). The IBA, disputing the IOC's decision to allow Khelif to compete, has filed a complaint citing gender concerns. Khelif plans to contest these claims to protect her rights.
Imane Khelif, the celebrated Olympic boxing gold medalist at the Paris Games, finds herself embroiled in a contentious legal battle over gender eligibility accusations. The International Boxing Association (IBA) has filed a complaint against the International Olympic Committee (IOC), citing safety concerns over the eligibility of athletes like Khelif.
The IBA's complaint highlights Khelif, from Algeria, and Taiwan's Lin Yu-ting, referencing U.S. President Donald Trump's recent executive order on transgender athletes as part of its justification. The order bans transgender women from female sports, which Trump commented on, labeling Khelif as a 'male boxer' in a recent speech.
Khelif, who has consistently competed as a woman, was initially banned from the 2023 world championships after a sex chromosome test by the IBA. However, the IOC, after assuming control of boxing due to the IBA's governance issues, reinstated her eligibility, affirming her longstanding participation in female categories.
