The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has been reinstated as a National Sports Federation following the Union Sports Ministry’s decision to lift its suspension. Former WFI president Brij Bhushan Singh expressed gratitude towards the ministry for this decision, while taking jabs at prominent wrestlers and politicians who had protested against the federation.
The suspension had been imposed following controversies surrounding the election of new WFI president Sanjay Singh and the scheduling of national tournaments, which led to opposition from key figures like Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, and Bajrang Punia. They accused Brij Bhushan Singh of misconduct, with the United World Wrestling imposing an international ban due to election delays.
After recent elections and another brief suspension, the Indian Olympic Association installed an ad-hoc committee, which was later dissolved post-ban. With future tournaments now on the horizon, the federation looks to support athletes, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds, through resumed training camps.
