Iconic KSLTA Stadium Renamed to Honor SM Krishna's Legacy
The KSLTA Stadium has been renamed the SM Krishna Tennis Stadium, honoring the late former state chief minister and tennis enthusiast. The dedication is marked by the introduction of scholarships for Karnataka's budding tennis players and plans for a new tennis complex. India tennis star Rohan Bopanna praises Krishna's legacy.
The KSLTA Stadium, a prominent tennis venue in the state, has been renamed the SM Krishna Tennis Stadium in a touching tribute to the late former chief minister. Krishna served as president of the Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association from 1999 to 2019, and his dedication to the sport remains celebrated after his death last year at the age of 92.
R Ashoka, the current President of KSLTA, expressed pride in renaming the stadium as a testament to Krishna's affection for tennis and his hard work. Ashoka revealed plans for a new tennis stadium and the annual SM Krishna Memorial Scholarships, awarded to promising tennis players from Karnataka, highlighting a continued investment in the state's sports talent.
In addition to the renaming, the stadium will host the SM Krishna Memorial Tournament, an ITF Men's M25 event featuring prize money of USD 30,000. Indian tennis star and KSLTA vice-president Rohan Bopanna shared his admiration, recalling how past tennis events inspired his career. The new stadium name is seen as a fitting homage to Krishna's contributions to tennis.
