This victory marks Norris as Britain's 11th Formula One world champion, as he amassed 423 points in a closely-fought season. Verstappen, who finished the season with more wins than any other driver, ended with 421 points.
In a remarkable achievement, McLaren also secured the constructors' championship for the second year in succession, winning both titles in the same season for the first time since 1998.
