The much-anticipated Lionel Messi event at Kolkata's Salt Lake Stadium on Saturday turned into chaos, with allegations of mismanagement leading to a law-and-order situation. The prime organiser was detained by police as the spectacle aimed at celebrating the football star devolved into turmoil.
Fans, unable to catch a proper glimpse of Messi due to poor planning, resorted to vandalism, hurling bottles and tearing banners. The disorder worsened when Messi left prematurely, further angering the crowd of spectators who had paid high ticket prices expecting a memorable experience.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, shocked by the events, has called for a high-level inquiry. An enquiry committee chaired by a retired Calcutta High Court judge will investigate the incident to hold accountable those responsible and recommend measures to prevent such debacles in the future.
