The West Bengal government has taken decisive action following the chaotic Lionel Messi event at Salt Lake Stadium last week. On Tuesday, it issued show-cause notices to DGP Rajeev Kumar and Bidhannagar Police Commissioner Mukesh Kumar, demanding explanations for lapses in management and setting a 24-hour deadline for responses.
Bidhannagar Deputy Commissioner of Police Aneesh Sarkar has been suspended, and departmental proceedings are underway against him for negligence. Meanwhile, Principal Secretary of the Youth Affairs and Sports Department Rajesh Kumar Sinha received a similar notice, and Salt Lake Stadium's CEO Deb Kumar Nandan was removed from his position.
In response to the probe panel's findings, led by retired Justice Ashim Kumar Roy, a Special Investigation Team of senior IPS officers has been established to thoroughly investigate the incident that not only damaged the stadium but also forced an early termination of the event and Messi's premature exit.
