Oscar Bids Farewell to Football: A Career of Triumph and Challenges
Former Chelsea star Oscar retires at 34 due to cardiac issues, ending a storied career that spanned top clubs worldwide. Despite intentions to continue with Sao Paulo, the Brazilian midfielder cited health concerns for his early departure. Oscar plans to support his club as a devoted fan henceforth.
Former Chelsea midfielder Oscar has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 34, citing persistent cardiac issues, according to a statement from his current club, Sao Paulo. The Brazilian international was hospitalized for five days in November, where doctors diagnosed him with vasovagal syncope, a fainting condition resulting from a sudden drop in heart rate and blood pressure.
Oscar, who was contracted with Sao Paulo until 2027, has decided to terminate his contract following medical advice. He expressed his disappointment on social media, stating, "I wanted to do more for Sao Paulo and continue playing, as I believed I had both the skill and age to do so, but unfortunately, circumstances have changed."
Reflecting on his extensive career, Oscar expressed contentment with his journey, having won the Premier League twice with Chelsea and the Chinese Super League three times with Shanghai Port before returning to his roots at Sao Paulo in December 2024. Though stepping away from the pitch, Oscar pledged to remain a dedicated supporter of his boyhood club.
