The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has embraced the 'Kohima Declaration,' a strategic plan to boost athletics in Nagaland and the Northeast, announced at its annual general meeting. Emphasizing infrastructure support, the declaration aims to position the region as a hub for national and international competitions.

Lalit K. Bhanot, president of the South Asian Athletics Federation, revealed that the meeting produced significant strategies, including mandatory SRY gene testing for national athletes, funded by the AFI and the government. This move is part of broader DNA testing efforts for performance mapping.

In pursuing widespread grassroots participation, the AFI will overhaul district bodies to reflect rural voices better and will launch an annual 2-kilometre race in 700 districts nationwide. Actions were also announced against non-performing state units, with some demoted to associate members.
